The release of PRINCE2:2009

 

2009 has become an important milestone in the history of project management with the release of the newly enhanced PRINCE2 project management method.

 

Since its publication in 1996 PRINCE2 has become the world’s must used project management method.

 

The purpose of the enhancements is to make PRINCE2 an even more user friendly model with better alignment to more commonly used project management terminology and practices. Since its original release we never envisaged PRINCE2 would become so widely accepted in so many different industries across the world.

 

As the challenges of 2009 and beyond are vastly different to 1996 it is natural for the methodology to evolve. Today’s PRINCE2 has a better balance between theory, logic and application.

8 Components

7 Themes.  Components are now referred to as ‘Themes’ and the former Components of ‘Change Control’ and ‘Configuration Management’ have been incorporated within the Theme ‘Change’.

8 Processes

7 Processes.  The former Planning process has now been integrated within the ‘Plan’ Theme and provided as an approach for project, stage or team plan creation.

36 Management Products

26 Management Products. A number of management products have been combined, others have undergone name and content changes.  Additions include the Project Product Description and Risk Management Strategy.

Post Project Review Plan

Is now replaced by a Benefits Review Plan and created during Initiating a Project.

Project Organization

Change Authority is now included as a role in the Project Organization providing improved recognition of change control decision making.

Senior User role has been expanded to include responsibilities associated with benefits realization during and post project.

Guidance on adapting PRINCE2

Improved guidance on adapting PRINCE2 to suit the project environment.

Product Based Planning

Product Based Planning rules have been streamlined to improve its usability.

 

 

We envisage the enhancements made to the methodology will allow PRINCE2 to remain the project management method of choice and the predominant project management certification in the world.
